Research in Vienna: Austrian painters of the 19th century in Dalmatia

During her study trip to Vienna in March 2015, Irena Kraševac examined the archival records of the Künstlerhaus Wien (Association of Austrian Artists), kept at the Wiener Stadt- und Landesarchiv (Municipal and Provincial Archives of Vienna).

An insight into the catalogues of annual and international exhibitions hosted at the Künstlerhaus from 1868 to 1918 reveals that Austrian artists often exhibited paintings featuring Dalmatian towns and landscapes. Such motifs recur frequently in the work of Rudolf von Alt (1812-1905), Josef Hoffmann (1831-1904), Emil Jakob Schindler (1842-1892) and Hugo Charlemont (1850-1939).
